The classic looks

Most pirate costumes come from a few familiar pieces:

• A tricorn or bandana on the head
• A loose white shirt with full sleeves
• A waistcoat or long coat
• A wide belt or sash at the waist
• Boots, or boot covers over ordinary shoes

Add a cutlass, an eye patch or a toy parrot and the costume is done.

Pirates in storybooks and fairy tales

Pirates turn up all over children's stories. Captain Hook in Peter Pan is the best known. He is recognised by his long red coat, plumed hat, curled hair and moustache, and of course the hook. Long John Silver from Treasure Island is usually shown with a crutch, a tricorn hat and a parrot on his shoulder. Many picture books feature friendly, silly pirates, often in bright stripes with a bandana and a treasure map.

Easy finishing touches

• A striped top for a deckhand look
• Gold hoop earrings (clip-on for children)
• A paper treasure map, tucked in a belt
• Drawn-on stubble or a curled moustache, using face paint
• A soft toy parrot pinned to the shoulder

If you use face paint, do a small skin test first.

Choosing for children or adults

For children, comfort comes first. Choose costumes they can move in, and check the label for the right size and any age guidance. Soft props are better than hard ones, especially at school events. A hat that stays on is worth more than an elaborate one.

For adults, there is more room to go bold. You can aim for a full Captain Hook, a weathered sea dog or a simple pirate suggestion with a shirt, sash and hat. Longer coats and boots make the look feel complete, but check they are comfortable if you will be on your feet all evening.
