Wizard of Oz Costumes

Characters for children

• Dorothy: a blue gingham pinafore or dress, a white blouse, and ruby red shoes. Add two plaits and a small basket.
• Scarecrow: patched, baggy clothes, a floppy hat and straw poking out of the sleeves and collar.
• Tin Man: silver or grey clothing, a funnel hat and metallic face paint or a silver hood.
• Cowardly Lion: a tan or golden jumpsuit, a tail and a mane around the face.
• Toto: a small dog costume, or a toy dog in the basket.

Characters for adults

Adults can wear the same four friends, but the witches also work well. Glinda needs a pink or white gown, a crown and a wand. The Wicked Witch of the West needs a black dress, a pointed hat, green face paint and a broom. The Wizard suits anyone who likes a frock coat, a bowler hat and a big personality.

Groups do well here. Four friends can go as Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion and walk in together.

Finishing touches to make at home

• Straw: tuck raffia or shredded brown paper into cuffs and hems for Scarecrow.
• Yellow brick road: paint yellow bricks on a strip of card and carry it as a sign or prop.

Do a small skin test of any face paint before the day.

Choosing the right size

Check the size chart on the product page and measure against it rather than guessing by age. If a child is between sizes, go up, so there is room for layers and growth.
