Characters for children

Princess Aurora is the classic pick. Look for a long gown in pink or blue, a small tiara and, if you like, a pair of gloves. Her hair matters too, so loose golden waves or a simple half-up style will do.

The three good fairies are fun for younger children and work well in a group. Each has her own colour: red, green or blue. A pointed hat, a wand and a cape or tabard are enough to make each fairy clear.

Prince Phillip suits children who prefer a hero. A tunic, a cape, boots and a toy sword (soft, for safety) make the outfit.

Characters for adults

Maleficent is the favourite for grown-ups. The signature pieces are a long black robe with a high collar, curved horns and a staff. Green face paint or a green tint is optional, but it makes the look. Do a small skin test of face paint first.

Aurora also works for adults, especially as a pair or family group. The three fairies are a good option for friends dressing up together. A prince costume works well for a couple.

Finishing touches to make at home

• A spinning wheel spindle: paint a wooden dowel or cardboard tube and add a card tip. It is a nice prop for Aurora or Maleficent.
• A crown of paper or fabric roses: Aurora's name in the story is Briar Rose, so a flower crown fits.

Choosing the right size

Check the size chart and measure the person who will wear it, rather than going by age alone. If a child is between sizes, go up, so there is room to move and layers underneath.
