Peter Pan Costumes

Characters for children

• Peter Pan: a green tunic, brown or green tights or leggings, and a green pointed cap with a feather.
• Wendy: a long pale blue nightgown, often with a ribbon at the waist. Loose hair or a simple ribbon completes it.
• Tinker Bell: a short green dress, small wings and a hair bun. Glitter or shimmer adds the fairy touch.
• John and Michael: old-fashioned pyjamas or nightshirts. Michael can carry a teddy bear, John a top hat and umbrella.

Characters for adults

• Captain Hook: a long red or burgundy coat, a wide-brimmed hat with a plume, a white frilly shirt and boots. The hook is the giveaway.
• Peter Pan or Tinker Bell: both work well for grown-ups, in a longer tunic or a short green dress.
• Mr Smee: a striped top, a red cap and round glasses. It is comfortable and easy to put together.
• Tiger Lily: a fringed dress and a headband with a feather. Choose pieces that fit the story, and skip anything that turns her into a stereotype.

Finishing touches to make at home

A feather cap is easy. Fold a piece of green felt into a point, stitch or glue the seam, and tuck in a feather.

For Captain Hook, wrap a card tube or a paper cup in foil and shape the curve from a bent piece of cardboard. Keep the tip rounded, and check that it does not bump other people.

Peter's shadow can be a black paper cutout on a string. It is a fun extra for Book Week.

Choosing the right size

Check the size chart against a recent measurement, and allow room for layers underneath. For children, a little growing room is better than a costume that trips them up.
