Characters for children

• Harry Potter: round glasses, a dark school robe, a red and gold striped tie and a wand.
• Hermione Granger: the same robe and tie, a wand, and bushy hair worn loose. A stack of books helps.
• Ron Weasley: the robe and tie, a wand, and a slightly scruffy, ginger look.
• Luna Lovegood: a blue and silver scarf or tie, big round novelty glasses and a wand tucked behind one ear.

Characters for adults

• Professor McGonagall: a long dark green robe, a pointed hat, square glasses and hair pulled back.
• Dumbledore: long flowing robes, half moon glasses, a long white beard and a wand.
• Severus Snape: a black high collared robe, dark shoulder length hair and a serious expression.
• Hagrid: a big shaggy coat, a wild beard and hair, and boots. Add an umbrella if you like.

Finishing touches to make at home

A wand is simple to make from a straight stick or a wooden dowel. Sand it smooth, then add grip and detail with paint or a little tape. A lightning bolt scar can be drawn with an eyeliner or face paint pencil. Do a small skin test first, and wash it off gently afterwards.

Choosing the right size

Check the size chart against a recent measurement, not the age on the label. Robes look best a little roomy, and a loose fit leaves space for a jumper underneath.
