Cinderella is the most popular choice for young children. The Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and the mice also work well, and they suit a group or a class.

Characters for adults

Adults often pick the Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming, or the Ugly Stepsisters for a party or Book Week. The stepmother is a good pick for anyone who wants something dramatic. Cinderella works too, in either her ball gown or her everyday work clothes.

Signature pieces

• Cinderella: a pale blue ball gown, or a simple apron and headscarf for her working dress. Add a pair of glass-style slippers.
• Fairy Godmother: a long robe or dress, a wand and a pair of wings if you like.
• Prince Charming: a fitted jacket with a sash, smart trousers and boots.
• Stepmother: a dark, formal gown and a stern expression.

Finishing touches to make at home

A wand is easy to make. Wrap a wooden dowel in foil or paint it, then tape a cardboard star to the top. Leave it to dry fully before use.

For a pumpkin coach accessory, cut a small orange bag or paper lantern and add green paper leaves. A handmade ticket or invitation to the ball also makes a nice prop.
