Getting the look
The classic looks
- Knight: a tunic or surcoat, a helmet or hood that looks like chainmail, a shield and a sword.
- King: a long robe, often red, purple or deep blue, with fur-style trim and a crown.
- Queen: a floor-length gown, a robe or cape, and a crown or tiara.
In storybooks and fairy tales
Knights are brave or gentle in different stories. Some fight dragons. Some rescue people, and some are a little clumsy. Kings and queens can be kind, proud, grumpy or wicked. Think of the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, or the king in The Princess and the Pea. King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table are a good source for older readers.
Choosing a character gives you a colour scheme. Red and black suit the Queen of Hearts. Silver and blue suit a knight. Gold and purple suit a king.
Easy finishing touches
- A cape or cloak in a strong colour.
- A belt with a sash or a costume sword holder.
- A crown, tiara or simple circlet.
- A cardboard or foam shield, decorated at home.
- A dragon toy, a scroll or a storybook to carry.
Face paint is fine for a moustache or a small crest. Do a small skin test first.
Children and adults
For children, comfort comes first. Choose costumes they can walk, sit and run in, and check that helmets and crowns fit without slipping over their eyes. Soft or foam swords and shields are usually easier at school. Check the label for age guidance.
For adults, robes, capes and crowns are easy to layer over normal clothes. A long tunic and a belt make a good knight. Check the event rules first, as some schools and venues do not allow toy weapons.
